In 2020, China won more overseas project opportunities by efficient pandemic prevention and control and fast resumption of business operations. Meanwhile, the one-stop solution provided by TÜV Rheinland for EPC projects has been developing with the times. According to Mrs. Ellen Sun, General Manager of TÜV Rheinland Greater China Industrial Inspection & Materials Testing, “Given COVID-19’s lasting impact overseas and the scale of overseas projects undertaken by China in the future, EPC companies or equipment manufacturers need more professional inspectors who are familiar with ASME standards and hold required certificates to ensure that projects comply with the manufacturing and construction requirements of overseas owners. Individual QA/QC personnel will also need to be qualified as required.

From March 19 to 21, TÜV Rheinland held the ASME Pressure Boundary Bolted Flange Professional Training in Qingdao, Shandong Province. The training made a useful attempt to help EPC and manufacturing companies as well as designers and personnel engaged in manufacturing, QA/QC and O&M related to pipeline and pressure vessel flanges further improve their professional capabilities and expand their knowledge, with positive results achieved.

TÜV Rheinland Industrial Services & Cybersecurity Greater China boasts a world-leading expert team. In the field of industrial services, we provide technical inspection, testing and certification services for oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical, energy and power, construction, process industries and other industries worldwide. In terms of industrial inspection and testing, TÜV Rheinland provides professional one-stop solutions of technical support, training and inspection for EPC projects from design, procurement, installation, commissioning and putting into service, in support of the efforts of Chinese companies to expand their business abroad in oil and gas, energy power stations, infrastructure, mining machinery, offshore modules, etc.

At the beginning of 2021, TÜV Rheinland has become ASME’s global training partner to provide theoretical and practical courses in basic knowledge and design, inspection, and installation of pipelines, pipe fittings, flanges, steam turbines, process safety, and welding, and issue ASME certificates for those successfully completing the courses in China. Among the courses, the goal of the training for flange professionals is to train and evaluate the ability of bolting workers to inspect, assemble, disassemble and tighten bolt joints in an effective and safe way.

During the three-day training, the trainees first systematically learned the principles of safe bolted joint assembly as outlined in ASME PCC-1-2019 standard, from the principles of sealing flange joints and ASME PCC-1, flanges, fasteners and gaskets, assembly/disassembly, to bolting safety and tool handling. They fully grasped the theoretical knowledge and laid a solid, professional foundation.

On the second day, the training focused on solving core problems, covering assembly process, gasket identification, flange surface type, tightening pipes and rotating equipment joints, tightening pipe joints on pressure relief devices, and determining target bolt-assembly load. Teaching and assessment were combined to help the participants resolve the core problems that may be encountered at work.

The last day was practical sessions. Taught with explanation and demonstration, the participants get a comprehensive understanding of gasket positioning, joint alignment, classic installation mode, influence of different gaskets, and lubricant function. At the same time, under the guidance of the teachers, all trainees applying for the certificate successfully installed at least two joints on site, mastering practical techniques.
